More: Top Tips for Working in a Dysfunctional Office
– Get away when possible – It is important to get away for lunch, coffee breaks and vacations whenever possible when dealing with toxic coworkers. Work offsite or close your door to separate yourself from distractions and drama.
– Update your resume. Even if you don’t want to leave yet, be prepared to start a job hunt at any moment. Things could change in an instant and you may find yourself going down with the ship if you don’t have a back-up plan in place.
– Save some money. This is not the time to go into any debt! Create a nest egg if you suspect you may have to quit before you find a new job.
– Network and be aware of your options. Competitors of today may be employers of tomorrow, keep your eyes and ears open for opportunities in and out of your company that might be a good fit for your skills. Keep a database of contacts for when you find yourself considering a change. When possible (without career suicide), let people know you are open to new opportunities they may hear of. They may know someone you should meet.
